Michel André Gauthier is a freelance American photographer born French, based in the Washington DC area. The experiential richness and composition of Michel’s photography undoubtedly relate to his significant achievement as a painter and an architect. Having embarked on a wide range of photography projects, Michel’s best-known works pertain to fine art photography and portraits.

His collections contain stellar examples of well-selected luminosity and painterly form that reflect a precision of execution that echoes the essential characteristics of his architectural work: assured compositional skills and refinement of proportions.

His portrait works, using natural or continuous light, stress his quest for authenticity over fashionable appearance and style.

In 2023, Michel's passion for painting and photography came together to create Memory of the Present, a unique photographic project departing from our subliminal vision. The image obeys the three unities rules: place, time, and action. One subject, one capture, one gesture, and nothing else define the instant. It is a space with no post-editing, no stacking where the truth overcomes. His project possesses a thoroughness of detailing that consistently reinforces strong formal concepts of striking clarity and experiential richness.

It is indeed evident that Michel's strong desire to create photography with spatial nuances of colors and impeccable detailing echoes his choice of cameras. He started primarily using medium format, Hasselblad allows him to reveal the clarity and richness of his work on small or large prints.

His forthcoming book La Habana, Grandeur and Mystery, with more than eighty unique photos, includes a study of the chromatic palette of the legendary city.
